Taught by Louise Steinway this class will start from the beginning. This is a great class to give your student a head start on their school music program or just start them off right with a good technical foundation and a love of playing.
Shelby Rae Murdock will be teaching our intermediate class. She will be focusing on developing technique, rhythm, and teaching some tunes. Students should have a basic knowledge of their instrument and have some experience playing tunes and with others.
Old-time fiddle dynamo Betse Ellis will be teaching our advanced players. Her class will focus on advanced fiddling techniques including rhythmic and melodic variations in an old-time style. She will be teaching to the highest level so be ready for an energy filled week of learning!
This class will be taught by Clarke Wyatt and will focus on the basics of playing fretted instruments. Clarkes deep love of traditional music make him an amazing teacher for imparting an understanding of traditional rhythm. Basic chords and melodies will be taught and used for backing up a variety of folk styles.
Louise will be teaching workshops on traditional folk dancing. Scottish, Contra, and Squares along with Two Steps, Waltzes, Schottisches, and maybe even some step dancing. Students will learn basic moves and techniques so as to better understand why we play what we play. Betse, Clarke, and Shelby will be providing live music for the dancing and demonstrating the finer points of playing for dances. There will be an open dance on Thursday afternoon that parents and friends are invited to attend and participate in.
In addition to our daily classes and workshops each afternoon during the last hour of camp we have special events. These activities are designed to enrich your students experience and expose them to the many aspects of folk music and its culture, beauty and variety.
The camp instructors will give an hour long performance featuring their unique musical styles. Students will have a chance to hear their instructors perform traditional and original material as a band.
Crankie is an old story telling art form that involves drawing, storytelling, and music to create a hand cranked moving picture show. Our students will be coming up with a story, drawing the role, and choosing music. The completed story will be featured at the student concert on Friday afternoon. This is a great chance for students to express their creativity in a variety of ways while tying it to the music they are learning.
Students will have the opportunity to sign up and perform their talent. Talent does not have to be music related and this is a chance for them to show their fellow students what they like to do. Always a favorite and highly entertaining.
This is a chance for everyone to join in the fun. Music will be provided by the instructors with few simple dances being taught and then danced. Bring your friends and family and come join the campers for some fun.
This is the culmination of camp and just a chance to show off what the students worked on during the week. It's a fun opportunity to perform and show parents, friends, and family what you can learn in just a week. Come out and help us support our students as they show off what they learned.
